All about grains preschool activities and printables

Y loves, loves, loves to help me cook! It was his interest in food, cooking, and of course eating that inspired this set of activities and printables! Today, we’re talking about grains!

Match the cards

First, we worked on identification. For this I created a simple 3 part card set of printables. These are available at the end of this post in English and Russian! All Y does at 3 years old is match the photos to each other and say the name of the grain.

Pouring

This unit is great for practicing pouring!

Spooning

Y just adores spooning! This is the perfect unit for lots of spooning practice!

Funnel pouring

This entire unit was inspired by a set of balloons we had leftover from Y’s birthday last month. He’s so interested in them, and I thought it would be fun to have him prepare the balloons for the sensorial work below.

The idea was to use a funnel to fill balloons with the grains. However, a note: be sure your funnel is large enough! I was glad I tried this work before putting it on the shelves because of course, a larger funnel is easier. Also, be sure to pour very, very slowly or the grains will get stuck.

Behind the scenes: coffeeee. Really, a lot of coffee. It’s gotten a bit out of control though- if Y sees me yawning he says I need to get some coffee.

Match the grain to cards

Straight forward: the child should match the bowls to the image cards.

 Feel and match

This was perhaps the most fun work for Y! He looooved the balloons! The idea with this work is to present the balloons, grains, and/or grains cards together. The child then has to match the balloons to the cards and/or bowls.

Note: for a control of error, be sure to fill different coloured balloons for each grain. Then, on the back of the corresponding cards, you could leave a sticker or draw a dot in the same colour as the balloon.

He was so excited to feel them, but he immediately wanted to open them to see the content. I had to demonstrate the idea a few times before he understood, but he was very interested in this.

This was such a fun unit and we learned the names of a few new to us grains, too! Putting together the printables for this unit, I even got some inspiration for in the kitchen and can’t wait to find some new (to us) grains to cook with!
