We have been loving life cycle themed activities at our house lately! Y has been particularly enjoying the crafts that we inevitably end up working on as part of our explorations! I love giving him new opportunities to explore his curiosity, but I have to admit this particular set of activities that I am sharing today is a part of my secret ‘post baby’ stash! Shh!
You see, I’ve been working a lot on getting a surprise stash of printables and activities stocked up for when baby number 2 arrives (any day now!). Baby number two is still teasing us with false labour, but we’re all getting really excited to meet her at any moment. That also means that I want to keep a few back up activities and printables that I can do with Y during long nursing sessions.
Today, I am sharing our Oak Tree life cycle activities! Y actually saw the printables for this and has been eager to get started on them. I’m hoping he’ll be just as excited within the next week or so once baby girl is here!
Life cycle activities: Oak Tree Life Cycle Printables
Age: Y is 4 years old
Goal: Teach students about the life cycle of an oak tree, learn about oak trees, and introduce new vocabulary. This set of printables can be used as a botany material, a language and vocabulary building work, or simply a fun life cycle study!
Studying nature is an important part of Montessori education. As Dr. Montessori said
“The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the earth.”
It’s very important to me to teach my children about nature and the earth that we live on. Exploring life cycles and plants is one way that we do this. Fall is an interesting time to study oak trees. Acorns fall from oak trees in September and October. I would even recommend collecting some acorns and spending time in nature alongside using these hands on learning materials.
Life cycle spinner
We use this spinner to introduce whatever life cycle it is that we are studying. I review vocabulary with Y and explain the phases of the life cycle. He likes to spin it himself and say the names of the phases!
Life cycle mats and gluing activity
I also provide a life cycle mat gluing activity. The presentation is kept simple and allows for review of the phases of an oak tree life cycle. This work also provides an opportunity to review vocabulary.
The control mat in this set can be used as wall art or to give the child an opportunity to check their work.

3 part cards (or 2 part cards)
These cards are great for working on vocabulary or early reading skills. You can use them as three part cards with an image card, the word card, and control card all separate.
Alternatively, you can print two sets of control cards and have your child match the control cards to each other.
Oak tree life cycle acorn craft
The presentation for this work is rather simple – I make sure to provide Y the materials he would need to complete it. In this case, it was simply acorn 1-6 printables, the life cycle of an oak tree printables, and a glue stick. I like to present the materials all seperately so that they are easily visible and Y can complete the work independently.
The finished result:

- Oak tree life cycle sequence cards (can be used as 3 or 2 part cards)
