Children’s hands help them to absorb information and learn! I really love this aspect of Montessori learning.
Here are several ideas for how to use salt (or sand etc) trays, to help your child practice writing.
How to use
Salt trays are great tools because children can easily ‘erase’ mistakes. They allow an effective way to practice penmanship. To set up our St Patrick’s Day Salt tray, I used our St Patrick’s Day Writing Cards alongside green salt! You can colour salt by taking a bag or container with a lid. Add desired amount of salt and a coloured piece of chalk. If you shake the chalk and salt around, the salt will become the colour of the salt. Nifty, huh?
In the example above, you can present these printables along with a salt tray. The child can see the letter and then practice writing it in the sand. I would also recommend presenting them alongside sandpaper letters for the child to first practice tracing letters. I do not have any in English so they are not photographed.
For learning English, at the moment, I do like to use this bookto help him first form the letters with his finger.
This type of set up could also be nice to practice writing using this set of cards. You could laminate the cards for repeated use.
