It’s time for the last article in the Our Montessori Spring series! I’m so excited to be sharing a new set of activities you can create to teach your children about desert animals, including a set of free Desert animals printables that correspond to Safari Ltd Toobs to create your own Montessori activities.
Montessori Activities: Desert animals language activities
You can use these cards for children approximately between the ages of 3-6.
Why: Using 2 and 3 part cards is a great for helping children to understand and master information. For this particular work, the children will get an introduction to Desert Animals.
Use as Montessori matching activity
For Y (4 years old), I use the image cards in combination with a Montessori 3 part lesson to teach him the names of the animals. After, presenting the names of the animals, you can offer this work to toddlers as a matching activity.
You can do this by printing the control cards twice or using the control cards and image cards together. Have your child match the animals to each other.
Alternatively, you can also use the animals from the Safari ltd desert toob.
These cards correspond to the animals in this particular set. Ask your child to match the animals to the control cards or just the image cards!
You can use this video as an example of how to present 3 part cards to children who are not yet reading. If your child can read, I would demonstrate the work differently, as I have explained below.
How to use 3 part cards for Montessori activities
For children that are starting to read, you can use this work of course, as traditional 3 part cards.
Creating your 3 part cards
Print the cards on durable paper. Sometimes (basically when I feel like it), I like to reinforce these cards on card stock, and laminate. However, Y is pretty careful with these cards so, usually, I just print on better quality paper and don’t even laminate them.
I probably should laminate the cards if I expect them to survive through to Natasha. Basically, if you have multiple children that will be using the materials, I probably would suggest taking the extra step to laminate them for additional durability.
Using 3 part cards
1. Take the tray and place it on your mat on the ground (or table, or wherever you work).
2. Lay out the image cards in front of you. Leave enough space for control cards to the right of each image card, and labels underneath each image card.
3. Next, match the label cards to the image cards. Place them underneath each image card.
4. Check your work by adding the control cards to the right of each image card.
5. Gather the materials, and put them back on the tray.
6. Bring the tray back to its spot on the shelving unit.
Now, it’s your child’s turn!
