Do you celebrate Thanksgiving? Even though I do not live in the United States anymore, Thanksgiving is still a holiday I like to celebrate with my family. One of the dishes I always make is a green bean casserole. To be honest, it’s that dish that inspired me to create our green bean life cycle activities for my students.
This set of activities has become one of the favorites amongst my students! We love to explore the different phases of a green bean plant’s life cycle with this unit!
Green Bean Life Cycle Activities
Age: You can use these cards for children approximately between the ages of 3-6.
As always, with our life cycle studies, I start with 3 part cards to introduce the material. Here, I presented our green beans life cycle 3 part cards in our custom tray. Children who cannot read yet can use the image and control cards for a matching work (2 part cards). Older children that are starting to read can use these as traditional 3 part cards. Using 2 and 3 part cards is great for helping children to understand and master information.
After introducing vocabulary, we study the parts of the life cycle with our spinner and a gluing work.

To reinforce the phases of the life cycle, you can also present the life cycle sequencing cards.
I like to add a control of error to the back of the cards by writing a number on them (1-7). This way, children can lay out the cards in order, and flip them to check their work. This work also comes with a poster that you can present as a way to check their work. The posters can also be used as classroom art.
Lastly, we finish up this unit with our green bean life cycle coloring book! The children love to make their own books with these cards!
They first color the pages, then place them in the correct order. Afterwards, they can staple or bind the pages together. They love reading their hand-made books!
