So it happened…My son has asked me to make slime. For a long time, I resisted, but in the end, the trend has even hit our home. We make play dough often, but I never bothered with slime until recently when we made this awesome Toxic Waste Slime! It was such a fun one to make with the cool glow in the dark effect and perfect for a Halloween Slime Recipe!

I can definitely see the benefit of slimes and play dough in helping to develop finger strength and even as de-stressers (for both kids and adults!).

Toxic Waste Slime Recipe

The thing that I love about slime is that unlike play dough, it just stays together and doesn’t leave crumbs everywhere! This slime is super stretchy and fun!

My son and his friends had a lot of fun exploring this one! It was so fun how they can stretch and manipulate it!

There’s just something so satisfying about manipulating slime. Stretching, pulling, squeezing!

Not only is there something soothing about doing these things that can really calm children, but it’s really a fantastic way to strengthen children’s hands and improve their fine motor skills.

This is something I have written about before, but at our school, there has been a trend that children are coming to school with weaker hands and poor fine motor skills. This means that they are unable to learn to write, hold scissors, or use glue because their hands are simply not ready.

Slime and play dough both offer fantastic opportunities for children to develop their hand-muscles and work on preparing their hands for writing. This is because the actions of squeezing the slime between their fingers, pulling it, exploring it in general develops exactly those muscles that are needed for holding a pencil.

Plus, it’s just plain fun and so pretty!

Aside from this huge benefit of developing hand-muscles, slime can offer a very soothing and calming effect. My son has been exhausted from school, sports, playing, and just growing. It’s all a lot. It also means that sometimes we have huge and I HUGE emotions after school.

A simple activity like slime can really help him to calm his frustration. Pulling, squeezing, and sometimes even punching something like a squishy slime can really help to give him an outlet for the big feelings he has been holding in at school during the day. This enough has helped me to see that I really can prepare slime for him more often.

Aside from these awesome reasons to make our cool Halloween slime recipe, the coolest part of this slime is when you turn off the lights!

You can see the very cool glow in the dark effect here! The kids just went wild for this!

The neighborhood kids were so excited for this that I had to order more glue to make some for them, too!

What you need for our Halloween Slime Recipe

How to make our Halloween Slime

To start, grab your container that you will use to make the slime. Make sure that it’s not one you will use for food afterwards. Add one bottle of Elmer’s Glow in the Dark Glue into the container. This glue will give your slime it’s cool color!

Now add water.

Then baking soda. The baking soda makes the slime thicker or thinner depending on how much you add.

Next comes the contact lens solution. This is the part that determines how sticky slime is. I personally really, really, reaaaallly don’t like slime and play dough to be too sticky so this is the part I am super particular about.

Now, it will all come together and your toxic waste slime will be ready to use once everything is mixed together well!
